Synopshots’ definition: Before & After

by Tim Dempsey on January 11, 2009

Star(ry) Night, originally uploaded by TimDD.

It is a common practice, since it is so easy, to provide a nice “before and after effect on the web. The mouse over behaviours of [almost] all browsers make it a snap.

I note with interest that most people illustrate their original photograph, as captured by their digital camera, as “before,” and their processed image as “after.”

I’d like to suggest everyone has it backwards. They idea behind the word “synopshots,” which came to me in a dream one night [if you know me you know I wouldn't make that up], is that the mind captures an extremely enriched memory that extends way beyond the red, green and blue, the composition and shapes, the white balance — which is a digital image. This is the “before.” The after is the work required to restore what you remember to what even a professional-grade digital SLR can record.

So I’m going to redesign synopshots.com to respect this more accurate view and these definitions…

… when I get back from Switzerland.
